The statement noted that a move by Canada would greatly benefit Indian farmers growing these crops and would also increase India’s agricultural export earnings.
Last year, for the first time, a shipment of fibre- and mineral-rich ‘Jalgaon Banana’ certified with a Geographical Indication (GI) was exported to Dubai. The bananas were sourced from progressive farmers in the village of Tandalwadi, which is part of Jalgaon district in Maharashtra, a banana cluster identified under the agricultural export policy.
India exported bananas worth over Rs 616 crore in 2020-21. India mainly exports bananas to Iran, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. India’s banana exports increased from 35,000 tons in 2016-17 to 1.91 lakh tons in 2020-21. Of these, Maharashtra’s share is about 70%.
India is the world’s largest producer of bananas with a share of around 25% in total production. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh contribute over 70% of the country’s banana production.
According to the second preliminary estimates of horticultural crops (2021-22), banana production in the current crop year increased by about 2% to 32.45 million tonnes (mt) compared to 2020-21 and the Total banana production area in the country is 0.23 million hectares.
